Tibetan Medicine Course in English held at Leh, Ladakh

A 5-Day Basic course on Tibetan Medicine in English was organized by Men-Tsee-Khang Cultural Centre, Leh from 20th to 24th August 2015.

Mr. Dhondup Tashi, Chief Representative of Sonamling Tibetan Settlement, Ladakh was the chief guest during the opening ceremony held on 20th August at 9 a.m. The other guests included Mr. Pema Sangpo, representative of Local Tibetan Chief Justice commissioner; Mr. Tsetan Wangchuk, vice chairman of Local Tibetan Assembly; representative from National Research Institute for Sowa-Rigpa; Dr. Phuntsok, chief Amchi of SNM Hospital, Geshe's and Head lama of respective monasteries, President of Local Tibetan Freedom movement, Director and Principal of SOS TCV School; Group leaders of Tibetan Camps.  Apart from the guests, resource persons of the 5-day basic course (Dr. Passang Wangdu, Dr. Nyima Gyaltsen, Dr. Pema Gyaltsen and Dr. Choenyi Samdup), the participants, media personals from doordarshan Leh, and reporter of Reach Ladakh Bulletin were present.

The function started with offering of the holy lamp by the chief guest followed by recitation of Yuthok prayer. Administrative Director Mr. Sonam Dorjee delivered the welcome and introduction speech.

Mr. Dhondup Tashi, the Chief Guest appreciated Men-Tsee-Khang Cultural Centre for initiating the activities in which interested people can come and learn about the Tibetan Medicine, one of the major sciences of knowledge.  He also welcomed the participants for taking interest in the traditional Tibetan science of healing.

During the course, the four speakers from Men-Tsee-Khang College presented topics ranging from a brief history of Sowa-Rigpa & introduction to four the tantras (rGyud-bZhi), health & disease, embryology, anatomy, physiology, seven psycho-somatic natures, theory of five elements, causes, conditions, & mode of disorder, diagnostic techniques, pulse diagnosis & its demonstration, urine analysis  & its demonstration, treatment measures, introduction to external therapies, relation-ship between Sowa-Rigpa & Tibetan Buddhism, seven essential limbs of herbal medicine, lifestyle regimen, diet & nutrition, relationship between Tibetan Medicine (Sowa-Rigpa) & Tibetan astro-science, taste, potency, & post-digestives taste in Tibetan Medicine.

There were 18 session of lectures with duration of one and a half hour each.  On 22nd August, all the speakers and participants were taken for a tour visit as part of the programme to the Tibetan settlement schools, TR- Co-operative show room, Tibetan camps and finally to His Holiness Palace- Phodang Gapheling in Ladakh. 

On 24 August the closing ceremony was held and the chief Guest was Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, Central Tibetan Administration.  The other dignitaries were Mr. Cheme Rigzin, Additional Secretary of Home Deptt, CTA; Mr. Dhondup Tashi, CRO Sonamling Tibetan Settlement; Representative of Local Tibetan Chief Justice commissioner, Chairman of Local Tibetan Assembly, President of Local Tibetan Freedom movement, Director and principal of SOS TCV School were also present.

The Chief Guest welcomed all the participants.  He emphasized the importance of organizing such kind of activities in imparting Tibetan medical tradition to those interested participants. He applauded Men-Tsee-Khang for the success in conducting such courses.
