PROJECT NO: B-02

NEED OF HIGH PERFORMANCE THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY (HPTLC)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Men-Tsee-Khang, (Tibetan Medical & Astro. Institute of His Holiness the Dalai Lama) is a cultural, educational and charitable institute registered under the Societies Registration Act of XXI of 1860. As the only institution of its kind in the world, Men-Tsee-Khang strives to promote and practice gSowa Rigpa (Tibetan medicine) and rTsis dkar-nag gNyis (Tibetan astronomy and astrology) and to provide an accessible health care to all in need. Through community-based clinical services, education of medical professionals, exhaustive research into natural medicines, documentation of text and lectures and distribution of in-formations of Men-Tsee-Khang ensures the preservation and development of Tibetan medicine and astrology. In 1916, the thirteenth Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of Tibetans, established Men-Tsee-Khang in Lhasa (Tibet's Capital) to formalize the training of the doctors and astrologers. In 1961 His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama re-established Men-Tsee-Khang in Dharamsala, India. Men-Tsee-Khang had produced 263 physicians and 47 astrologers from 15 medical batches and 7 astrological batches in the last 53 years in exile and as many as 114 doctors and 16 Astrologers are still working in our institute.

The Pharmaceutical Department of Men-Tsee-Khang produces nearly 170 different recipes/drugs of Tibetan medicine based on the prevalence of diseases and Herbal Product Research Department produces nearly 43 variants of Sorig Healthcare products ranging from health tonic supplements to varieties of health drinks meant for the different disorders due to the disequilibrium of three principle humors, different types of lotion, skincare creams based on the nature of one’s skin, massage oil, and etc.
The Quality Assurance Laboratory was mainly established with the goal to control the quality of Tibetan medicine and healthcare products produced from this institute. It has a microbiology unit to carry out the microbiological testing of crude drugs prior to passing it in the production unit. After production, finished products are tested for microbial load and step wise vigilance process for the microbial contaminant as per the protocol of World Health Organization (WHO) limit. The phyto-chemical testing of Tibetan Medicine and other chemical testing of skin healthcare products are done with one instrument called UV Spectrometer. The current facility in the laboratory is inadequate for further scientific research of Tibetan medicine and to engage in further scientific research of Tibetan medicine, some more advanced machines are required.

Besides, routine quality control testing, various research work on the qualitative parameters of Tibetan medicine and its medicinal herbs are carried out with the facilities available in hand but due to lack of infrastructure especially availability of sophisticated instruments like High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer etc the research on the Tibetan medicine is very limited.

GOAL OF THE PROJECT:

To improve the quality of Tibetan medicine according to today’s Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard by maintaining the standard prescribed in the treatise of Traditional Tibetan medical system.

OBJECTIVES

1. To explore scientific evidence of Tibetan medicine.
2. To standardize the quality of Tibetan medicine and its crude drugs.
3. To guarantee the potency and efficacy of Tibetan medicine.
