PROJECT NO: B-01

NEW TIBETAN MEDICAL & ASTROLOGICAL COLLEGE OF MEN-TSEE-KHANG

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Men-Tsee-Khang, (Tibetan Medical & Astro. Institute of His Holiness the Dalai Lama) is a cultural, educational and charitable institute registered under the Societies Registration Act of XXI of 1860. As the only institution of its kind in the world, Men-Tsee-Khang strives to promote and practice gSowa Rigpa (Tibetan medicine) and rTsis dkar-nag gNyis (Tibetan astronomy and astrology) and to provide an accessible health care to all in need. Through community-based clinical services, education of medical professionals, exhaustive research into natural medicines, documentation of text and lectures and distribution of in-formations of Men-Tsee-Khang ensures the preservation and development of Tibetan medicine and astrology. In 1916, the thirteenth Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of Tibetans, established Men-Tsee-Khang in Lhasa (Tibet's Capital) to formalize the training of the doctors and astrologers. In 1961 His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama re-established Men-Tsee-Khang in Dharamsala, India. Men-Tsee-Khang had produced 263 physicians and 47 astrologers from 15 medical batches and 7astrological batches in the last 53 years in exile and as many as 114 doctors and 16 Astrologers are still working in our institute.

Although we have hundreds of applicants for admission in our college but due to the inadequate infrastructural facilities such as classrooms, hostels, research centers etc, we were able to admit only 25-30 and 5-10 medical and astro students respectively in our college in Dharamsala. More over the demand for Tibetan medicine from international community had been increasing day by day and there are certain sections of people such as students, researchers and many others have developed a passion to learn and research the field which plays a vital role in widening its scope and opportunities for development. It is matter of plight for us that our college’s alumni consist of different nationalities such as Mongolian, Russian, Japanese, Korean and trans-Himalayans.

It is therefore instituting a new Tibetan medical and astrological college having both hospital facilities and academic study program for our students which could solve the future problems.  This institute will also be ideal for conducting research through scientific means that would help to bestow universal recognition of the Tibetan Knowledge of healing (Sowa-Rigpa). Initiating a project based on these conceptions we hope to fulfill the following goal and objectives.

PROJECT GOAL

Instituting a New Medical College on modern trends of having its own hospital and research wing is the only way to preserve and promote Sowa Rigpa, Traditional Tibetan Knowledge of Healing.
